The Maudsley Cultural Psychiatry Group was founded in December 2019 by Dr Preety Das, a British Indian, Psychotherapist & Psychiatrist with a background in Public Health.
Ten psychiatrists, psychologists and researchers from personally diverse backgrounds were brought together to form a steering group, with the shared aim of bridging the gap between institutional practice and needs of local communities.
In particular, they felt passionately about addressing racial inequalities in the access, experiences and outcomes of marginalised groups within mental health services, by centring the voices of those most impacted.
In 2020, they were funded by Health Education England to conduct a review of the Maudsley Training Programme curriculum. They each have dual backgrounds in Public Health, Sociology, Anthropology and Cultural Studies.
They meet once every fortnight and aim to embody a non-hierarchical model with rotating leadership.
